Welcome to The Fitch Foundation, a beacon of hope and support for our nation’s Veterans. Founded in 2009 by Laura JF Powell, our organization emerged from a deep commitment to enhancing the lives of those who have served our country.
Laura’s journey began as a military contractor, where she trained troops in the intricacies of survival radios. As her contract concluded, she pivoted her focus to addressing the pressing needs of Veterans. Inspired by her father, Robert E. Fitch, and his compassionate community spirit, Laura witnessed firsthand the challenges Veterans faced, particularly in accessing meaningful support outside the confines of their homes.
Observing her father’s battles with cancer treatment at the VA hospital, Laura discovered a glaring gap in Veteran care—loneliness and isolation. Motivated to make a difference, she founded The Fitch Foundation, named in honor of Robert Fitch, a beloved figure in Pensacola, Florida, known for his coaching prowess and community activism.
Driven by Robert’s legacy of generosity, The Fitch Foundation strives to provide Veterans with opportunities for active engagement through sports programs and holistic health education. Recognizing the financial and participation barriers Veterans often encounter with existing VA programs, we are dedicated to offering accessible, sustainable solutions.
Our vision extends beyond immediate assistance. Inspired by Laura’s biological father, Joseph Wolfenbarger, a Vietnam Veteran who shares Robert Fitch’s philanthropic spirit, we continue to expand our reach. Together, we envision Veteran Day Centers nationwide, safe havens where Veterans can find camaraderie and participate in enriching activities daily.
